Founded on Christian values, yes. But the founders were wary of mixing religion with the state.
No, they were wary of mixing the state with religion, using the Church of England as an example. It wasn't Christianity they feared, it was gov't. They had no objection to communities reflecting the faith of their citizens. They never made one argument to suggest that people should betray their faith in public. They didn't want gov't hijacking faith. I recommend that you inform yourself about the fallout of the so-called Reformation and the abuses of the English monarchy via the Anglican Church.
