It seems to delude people into believing they are really in charge of the giant ever increasing parasite feeding on them, and it does keep out some dictators sometimes, but the only part that really always makes a difference is voting on propositions.

I always vote, but democracy is not perfect and it’s not even morally perfect. I live in a representative republic myself.
